Currently Madrid has two main stations: Atocha Station and Chamartín Station. All long-distance trains will arrive at one or the other.
Atocha Station

Located to the South of the city. Trains coming from and running towards Andalusia, Extremadura and Portugal. This station is the departure and arrival point for the AVE (High-speed train). It is connected to Chamartín Station by an underground train.
The station is located in the Atocha neighbourhood in the district of Arganzuela. The original façade is facing the Glorieta del Emperador Carlos V in front of the Reina Sofía Museum and at the beginning of the Paseo del Prado, which corresponds to the Atocha underground station. However, the new entrance is on the other side of the hall, with its clock-tower, the coliseum access and the monument in memory of the victims of the Madrid bombings on the 11th of March of 2004.
Commuter
Railway services are provided by the national railway company Renfe and they include connections with all Madrid suburban lines and with the national high-speed trains that travel to Seville and Tarragona (AVE), to Toledo (Avant), to Albacete (Alaris) and to Alicante (Altaria).
In the urban field, this station is connected to Atocha Renfe underground station, to EMT bus lines 10, 14, 19, 24, 26, 32, 37, 54, 57, 102, 141 and to night buses (owls) N9, N10 and N11.
Furthermore, car access, with its corresponding taxi stand, is on the side of the station, in calle Méndez Álvaro (on the opposite side to the avenida Ciudad de Barcelona).

Located to the North of the city, it connects with Albacete, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cádiz, Cartagena, Córdoba, Irún, Málaga, Santander, Seville, Soria and Zaragoza, as well as with France.
Chamartín is an underground station on line 1 and 10, which is located in Chamartín Renfe railway station, in the Chamartín district. This station is connected to the entire suburban network and to the RENFE long-distance line.
INFORMATION ON LONG-DISTANCE AND HIGH-SPEED TRAINS
Alaris Train
Madrid-Valencia-Castellón: it departs from Atocha station and covers the distance to Valencia in 3 hours and 30 minutes. It takes 4 hours and 15 minutes to arrive at Castellón.
Altaria Train
Madrid-Alicante: it departs from Chamartín and takes 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Madrid-Algeciras: it departs from Atocha and takes 5 hours and 30 minutes. The train stops in Ciudad Real and Córdoba.
Madrid-Barcelona: it departs from Atocha and takes 4 hours and 45 minutes. The train stops in Zaragoza, Lleida and Tarragona.
Madrid-Cádiz: it departs from Atocha and takes 5 hours and 15 minutes. The train stops in Córdoba and Seville.
Madrid-Granada: it departs from Atocha and takes 5 hours and 20 minutes. The train stops in Córdoba.
Madrid-Logroño: it departs from Atocha and takes 3 hours and 40 minutes.
Madrid-Murcia-Cartagena: it departs from Chamartín and it takes 4 hours to get to Murcia and an extra hour to get to Cartagena.
Madrid-Pamplona: it departs from Atocha and takes 3 hours and 40 minutes.
Madrid-San Sebastián-Irún: it departs from Atocha and takes 5 hours and 20 minutes to get to San Sebastián and 5 hours and 35 minutes to get to Irún.
Madrid-Vitoria: it departs from Atocha and takes 4 hours and 15minutes to get to Vitoria.
Alvia
Madrid-Barcelona: it departs from Atocha and takes 4 hours and 15 minutes.
AVE
Madrid-Seville: it departs from Atocha and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Madrid-Zaragoza-Lleida-Tarragona: it departs from Atocha and takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to get to Zaragoza, 2 hours and 30 minutes to get to Lleida and 3 hours to get to Tarragona.
Madrid-Zaragoza-Huesca: it departs from Atocha and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Zaragoza and 2 hours and 20 minutes to arrive at Huesca.
Talgo 200 Madrid-Málaga: it departs from Atocha and takes 4 hours to complete the journey.
Intercity Train
Madrid-Hendaya: it departs from Chamartín and takes 7 hours to complete the total distance.
Talgo Train
Madrid-Pontevedra-A Coruña: it departs from Chamartín and takes 8 hours and 25 minutes. The train stops in Ourense, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo.
Madrid-Badajoz: it departs from Atocha and covers the distance in 5 hours and 10 minutes.
Madrid-Gijón: it departs from Chamartín and takes 6 hours and 10 minutes to reach its destination.
Madrid-Santander: it departs from Chamartín and takes 5 hours and 35 minutes.
Madrid-Almería: it departs from Chamartín and takes 6 hours and 45 minutes. The train stops at Atocha.
HOW TO TRAVEL FROM MADRID TO PARIS OR LISBON BY TRAIN
Trains that connect Madrid with Paris or Lisbon are usually night trains that depart from Chamartín Station.
Madrid-Lisbon (Santa Apolonia): Lusitania Night Train. This train runs every day and takes 9 hours and 30 minutes.
Madrid-Paris (Austerlitz): Francisco de Goya Night Train. The train takes 13 hours and 35 minutes and stops in the French towns of Orléans, Blois and Poitiers.
INFORMATION ON MEDIUM-DISTANCE TRAINS
Medium-distance trains, which depart from both Atocha and Chamartín, connect Madrid with other Spanish cities.
1. High-speed, medium-distance trains (Avant)
Avant Madrid-Ciudad Real-Puertollano: It departs from Atocha and takes 50 minutes to get to Ciudad Real and 1 hour and 13 minutes to get to Puertollano.
Avant Madrid-Toledo: It departs from Atocha and takes only 35 minutes.
2. Other average-speed medium-distance trains
Medium distance trains that operate in the Centre and North of Spain
Line R-1. Madrid-Ávila: it departs from Atocha and takes 2 hours and 6 minutes. The train stops at Chamartín Station. The express train from Chamartín Station only takes 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Line R-2. Madrid Segovia: it departs from Atocha and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. The train stops at Chamartín.
Line R-3. Madrid-Soria: it departs from Chamartín and takes 3 hours.
Line R-4. Madrid-Arcos de Jalón-Zaragoza: it departs from Chamartín and takes 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Line R-20. Madrid-Salamanca: it departs from Chamartín and takes 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Line R-22. Madrid-Valladolid: express train that departs from Chamartín and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. This train only runs on weekends.
Line R-21. Madrid-Valladolid-León: regional train that departs from Atocha and takes 4 hours and 40 minutes. The express train that departs from Chamartín takes 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Line R-27. Madrid-Valladolid-Vitoria: it departs from Chamartín and takes 5 hours and 30 minutes.

Line R-6-Madrid-Cuenca-Valencia: it departs from Atocha and takes 6 hours to cover the total distance.
Line R-7: Madrid-Alcázar-Albacete: it departs from Chamartín and takes 3 hours to get to Albacete.
Medium-distance trains that operate in the Centre of Spain, North of Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha
Line R-8: Madrid-Ciudad Real-Jaén: it departs from Atocha and takes 3 hours and 38 minutes. The express train, which also departs from Atocha, takes 4 hours and 5 minutes.
Line R-9: Madrid-C. Real-C. de Buey-Badajoz: it departs from Atocha and takes 8 hours and 15 minutes.
Line R-10: Madrid-Cáceres-Badajoz: it departs from Atocha and takes 5 hours and 45 minutes.
