Commentary: The museum has a collection of paintings from the 16th-19th centuries.
Nowadays, the Museum of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando holds more than 1,400 paintings, 600 sculptures and 15,000 drawings, as well as an excellent collection of Decorative Arts such as tapestries, silverware, ceramics, china, clocks, furniture and medals.
The permanent collection includes masterpieces of Spanish, Italian and Flemish art. Goya became member in 1780 and the Museum conserves 13 of his paintings, such as two Self-portraits, The Bullfight, portraits of Moratín, Juan de Villanueva, the actress La Tirana and the famous Carnival scene that is known as the Burial of the Sardine.

Zurbaráns Agnus dei and Frailes Mercedarios;
A Mary Magdalene by Ribera painted in 1636: the only Arcimboldo that is conserved in Spain;
La Riva degli Schiavoni en Venecia, painted by Leandro Bassano;
The biblical scene of Susanna and the Elders painted by Rubens; the Maquesa de Llano by Mengs;
Van Loos Venus Mercurio y Amor; the 19th century is represented by Spanish art with the portraits of Vicente López, the magnificent portrait of Manuel Godoy, the Príncipe de la Paz by José de Madrazo or the Portrait of Elizabeth II of Federico de Madrazo.
We can also see other trends like the Esquivels romanticism and other genres such as Haes landscapes.
There is also a fine collection of sculptures, offering visitors a panorama of the evolution of this discipline in Spain from the 17th century to date, with works by Manuel Pereira, Pedro de Mena, Mariano Benlliure, Picasso and Pablo Gargallo, to name a few.
