How to get to and from madrid by car

Madrid has six main roads that lead in and out of the city: from the A.1 to the A.6.
Madrid also has by-pass roads and radial roads that go round the city and make it quicker and easier to access the different parts of the city.

MAIN ROADS


A-1. Madrid - Irún. Autovía del Norte ( North Motorway )
It basically connects Madrid with Burgos, from where one can travel towards Cantabria or the Basque Country, and it is the route used to get to France via Irún. This road is also used to reach the ports from where ferries depart towards Great Britain. The closest point to this road is the Sierra Norte Madrileña, then Miraflores de la Sierra, San Agustín de Guadalix and even further on the Aztar reservoir.


This road crosses the following provinces and communities: Segovia, Burgos and the Basque Country. This road connects the capital with the French border.
This road crosses the following municipalities in the Community of Madrid: El Molar, San Agustín de Guadalix, Circuito del Jarama, Algete, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Alcobendas.

A-2. Madrid - Barcelona. Autovía de Aragón ( Aragón Motorway )
This motorway goes directly to Barcelona and the Costa Brava, via Guadalajara, Zaragoza (crossing the Monegros Desert) and passing close by to Lleida. It also connects with the French border via La Junquera.

This road crosses the following provinces and communities: Guadalajara, Soria, Zaragoza, Lleida and Barcelona.
This road crosses the following municipalities in the Community of Madrid: Coslada, San Fernando, Torrejón de Ardoz and Alcalá de Henares.




A-3. Madrid-Valencia. Autovía de Valencia ( Valencia Motorway )
This road is used when travelling to Cuenca, Albacete, Murcia, towns on the Mediterranean coast in Alicante (Costa Blanca), Valencia and Castellón (Costa de Azahar).

This road crosses the following provinces and communities: Cuenca and Valencia.
This road crosses the following municipalities in the Community of Madrid: Vicálvaro, Rivas Vaciamadrid, Arganda del Rey and Villarejo de Salvanés.




A-4. Madrid-Sevilla. Autovía de Andalucía ( Andalucia Motorway )
This road is used when travelling to the following cities: Ciudad Real, Jaén, Córdoba, Seville, Granada, Almería, Málaga y Cádiz, Jerez de la Frontera, Tarifa, tourist areas located on the Costa del Sol and the Costa Cálida, as well as Gibraltar. This road is also used to reach the ports from where ferries depart towards Morocco.

This road crosses the following provinces and communities: Toledo, Ciudad Real, Jaén, Córdoba and Seville.
This road crosses the following municipalities in the Community of Madrid: Getafe, Pinto, Valdemoro, Ciempozuelos and Aranjuez.





A-5. Madrid-badajoz. Autovía de Extremadura ( Extremadura Motorway )
This freeway leads to Talavera, Trujillo, Cáceres, Mérida, Badajoz, and also to Lisbon and Algarve (in the South of Portugal). This road is also a good alternative to travel to Western Andalusia.

This road crosses the following provinces and communities: Toledo, Cáceres and Badajoz
This road crosses the following municipalities in the Community of Madrid: Alcorcón, Móstoles and Navalcarnero.





A-6. Madrid-A Coruña. Autovía de A Coruña ( A Coruña Motorway )
By means of this road one can travel to El Escorial, Segovia, Ávila, Salamanca, Valladolid, Zamora, León, Galicia, Asturias and the North of Portugal. 

This road crosses the following provinces and communities: Segovia, Ávila, Valladolid, Zamora, León, Lugo and A Coruña.
This road crosses the following municipalities in the Community of Madrid: Pozuelo de Alarcón, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Torrelodones and Villalba.

RADIALES Y CIRCUNVALACIONES


Circunvalaciones

M-30: Out of all the by-pass roads the M-30 is the eldest and closest one to Madrid.

M-40: This road runs close by to Vicálvaro, Alcobendas, Villaverde, Vallecas, Fuencarral, the Juan Carlos I Exhibition Centre and the Ifema trade park.

M-45: It connects the South-West of the Community.

M-50: This by-pass is the furthest away of them all and it is used to access and connect the South-West of Madrid.

Madrid has also got several radial toll motorways:

R-2: Madrid-Guadalajara

R-3: Madrid-Arganda del Rey

R-4: Madrid-Ocaña

R-5: Madrid- Navalcarnero
