Urban buses, which belong to the EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transporte /Municipal Transport Company  http://www.emtmadrid.es ) are a good alternative to the underground. These buses cover the suburbs and other areas that the underground does not reach. Madrid has a lot of traffic, we therefore recommend you to catch a bus if you want to see the city as you travel and to use the underground if you are in a hurry. On each bus stop you will find city maps that indicate the bus routes.  Most of the lines run every day from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., every 10 or 15 minutes.

Bus stops are distributes across the entire city. At each one of them you can check the complete bus route. Single tickets can be purchased on the bus, but 10-trip travel cards must be bought from newsagent's, authorised tobacconist's and underground stations.

All buses have air conditioning and many of them use environmentally friendly energy. Approximately half of the buses are equipped for wheel chairs. Bus drivers are entitled to not let you board the bus with luggage if the bus is too full.

NIGHT BUSES: OWLS ( CALLED BUHOS)

Night buses, which are called owls as they run at nighttimes until dawn, offer different routes across the city. As they run at night they do not run as often as day buses. There are different routes and all of them depart from the Plaza de la Cibeles.
