How to get around madrid on the underground
Category: Tourism - Transport

Madrid has one of the largest underground networks in Europe. Nowadays, the underground allows you to go to any place in the capital and is without doubt the cheapest and the fastest way to travel, as it avoids the capital's constant city traffic jams.

The underground runs from 6:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. from Monday to Sunday. Trains usually run every two minutes during rush hours and every 15 minutes after midnight.

Trains run more often during the week than at weekends. The Pitis underground station (line 7) and the stretch between the Puerta de Arganda station and the Arganda del Rey station have different schedules regarding the rest of stations.

Single Metromadrid  ticket
Valid for only one trip between underground stations in the municipality of Madrid (Zone A).

10-trip Metrobús travel card
With the Metrobús travel card you will be able to do up to 10 trips on MetroMadrid or EMT, without having to show a different ticket for each means of transport.  It is valid at all underground stations in Zone A and at all EMT stations, except on the Plaza de Colón-Airport line.

Tickets can be bought at:
Ticket offices at any underground station (MetroMadrid, MetroSur and TFM).
Automatic ticket machines located in the halls of underground stations, at the barriers of the Puerta del Sur underground station and on the main platform of the Puerta de Arganda underground station.
EMT stands (not on buses).

Tickets can be bought at ticket offices at stations or at automatic machines and EMT stands.

There are information booths in the halls of the Atocha-Renfe, Chamartín and Avenida de América stations. Company workers are posted along the entire underground network to help you out. ABONO TURÍSTICO

We recommend visitors and tourists to purchase a Tourist Travel Card, which can be used on all public transports in the Community of Madrid. It is the best way to visit all the interesting tourist sites in the city centre and in the rest of the Community.

The travel card can be bought at underground stations, at the Traveller helpdesk at the two airport stations (line 8), at Tourist Offices, at the Regional Transport Consortium, at tourist sites, on the Internet, and also at some tobacconist's and newsagent's. Children under 11 have a 50% discount when purchasing the Tourist Travel Card.

Users can choose between two zones: Zone A, which includes underground services, Madrid EMT and Suburban trains - Renfe, and Zone T, which includes all the previous services plus intercity buses that travel between Madrid and Guadalajara and Toledo - .
