The Marquis of Salamanca was the driving force behind the creation of this upper-class district, the first of the city to be meticulously planned, in
the second half of the C19th. The symmetrical lines of its streets, squares and buildings are the antithesis of the old districts of the city centre, where improvisation was the only form of town planning.
Today, the Salamanca district is a residential area with a large number of art and fashion outlets, many of which are in the calle Serrano.
