| In this street, which leads
to the Royal Palace, one can find the church
of San Ginés. Of mediaeval origin, rebuilt
in 1645 by Juan Ruiz after a fire. |

In 1824 it underwent another fire and
was rebuilt to its current aspect by José María Aguilar.
Inside one can see a painting by El Greco, "La expulsión
de los Mercaderes" (Expulsion of the merchants). Leaving
Arenal street, one can find nearby the Monastery
of the Descalzas Reales (Plaza de las Descalzas,
1), founded in 1556 by Carlos V's daughter, Juana de
Austria. Built in the Renaissance style. It holds paintings
by Murillo, Tiziano, Rubens, Zurbarán...
At the end of Arenal street we come to Plaza
de Isabel II and the Teatro
de la Ópera (Theatre of the Opera), behind which
is the Plaza de Oriente and the Royal Palace (Palacio
Real).
