Does your train leave from Atocha or Chamartín? Go to the station printed on your ticket. Check the return journey too: it may use a different station. Choosing a station only by your destination, an old timetable or its proximity to your hotel could take you to the wrong place.
The city’s two main railway stations are Madrid Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes and Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor. The Atocha complex also includes Atocha Cercanías, with separate entrances and platforms. This guide helps you find your way, transfer between stations and plan your journey to the centre or airport.

Before buying, compare the whole journey: train, arrival station and onward travel to your accommodation. Once booked, keep the date, time, train number and exact station to hand. Check your operator’s messages before leaving.
Getting to Atocha and finding your train
The Metro station connected to the interchange is called Atocha, on line 1. Its former name, Atocha Renfe, changed in 2022. Estación del Arte is a different stop on the same line: do not confuse the names when using an old map.
Inside the complex, follow the signs for your service. If you arrive on Cercanías and change to a train with controlled boarding, allow time to walk through the station and pass any required checks. Look for your train number on the displays; the final destination shown may be different from the city where you get off.

Getting to Chamartín-Clara Campoamor
Chamartín connects with Metro lines 1 and 10 and Cercanías. When planning your journey, select the full railway station name: the Chamartín district and Pinar de Chamartín Metro station are different destinations.
Adif announced completion of the station renovation in June 2026. Use the current signs rather than access instructions from earlier phases of the works. Follow the signs for your service and allow time to walk through the station.

Atocha to Chamartín: step by step
Under normal operating conditions, Cercanías connects the two stations. For example, the official diagram for line C2 shows the route Atocha, Recoletos, Nuevos Ministerios and Chamartín. Other services use the tunnel via Sol; check the displays to confirm that your train stops at your destination.
- On arrival at Atocha, follow the signs for Cercanías.
- Check whether your ticket includes the transfer, or buy a valid ticket.
- Choose a train whose list of stops includes Chamartín-Clara Campoamor. Do not board solely because you remember a platform number from a previous journey.
- On arrival, leave the Cercanías area and follow the signs for your next train or the Metro, as appropriate.
For the reverse journey, choose a service that stops at Atocha. If continuing by high-speed train, allow time to walk to the boarding area.

Time on the train is not the same as the time needed for the whole connection. Allow for getting off the first train, walking through both stations, waiting and boarding. As an editorial planning guideline, we would avoid booking two long-distance trains at different stations less than 90 minutes apart. This does not guarantee the connection: allow longer with bulky luggage, if you need assistance or if missing the second train would be unacceptable. Check your rights if the tickets are separate.
Tickets and transfer fares
Renfe lists a single Cercanías ticket at €1.70 for one or two zones. Check the fare for your selected origin and destination and any cost for the ticket medium. If using Cronos contactless payment, tap in and out with the same payment method. See the official fares and conditions.
Before buying, check whether your train ticket includes Combinado Cercanías. Renfe includes this benefit with AVE and long-distance tickets, allowing use from four hours before departure until four hours after arrival. Confirm the coverage for your ticket and follow its instructions; do not assume it applies to every operator or fare. Renfe’s conditions.
Getting to Madrid Airport
The current CRTM diagram shows C1 between Chamartín-Clara Campoamor and Aeropuerto T4, via Fuente de la Mora and Valdebebas. From Atocha, plan the connection to Chamartín first and then take C1, unless the official journey planner offers another option for your travel date. Do not assume there is a direct C1 from Atocha because an old guide says so.
Check your flight terminal: Aeropuerto T4 is not the same as T1, T2 or T3. Allow for any transfer between terminals and the time needed before your flight. Check the official C1 route and information from Aena. For the rest of your arrival planning, see our Madrid Airport guide.
Engineering works and service notices: what to check
Notice checked on 20 October 2026: on 24 and 25 October, C5 services start and end at Atocha from the start of service until 10:00. To continue along the same line beyond Atocha, change to another C5 train. This notice does not mean that the entire Atocha–Chamartín connection is closed. Renfe service notice.
For other dates, check Adif’s notices, information from Cercanías Madrid and messages from your train operator. An old closure notice does not show that the disruption is still in effect.
Quick checklist for arriving in or leaving Madrid by train
Leaving Madrid
- Check the exact station, date, time, train number and boarding deadline.
- Keep your ticket and carry the identification required by your operator.
- Check the luggage allowance and book any assistance you need in advance.
- Check for disruption and allow time to reach the boarding area, not just the station entrance.
Arriving in Madrid
- Identify your station and the best connection to your final address.
- If changing trains, check whether you also need to change stations.
- Keep your ticket when leaving through the ticket gates and check how to validate it.
- If someone is picking you up, agree on a specific meeting point.
